Every summer, something magical happens in Vancouver. A white tent goes up in Sen̓áḵw/Vanier Park, right by the ocean. Inside, Shakespeare comes alive.
This is Bard on the Beach. It’s one of Canada’s top summer theatre festivals. Since 1990, it has brought classic stories to the heart of Vancouver. Whether you're a Shakespeare lover or a first-time visitor, Bard is something you won’t forget.
Let’s explore what makes this festival so special.
Bard on the Beach is a non-profit theatre company. It produces plays by William Shakespeare, along with works inspired by him. The shows take place in a custom-built tent with views of the ocean, mountains, and city skyline.
The setting alone is breathtaking. But the performances are what truly shine. The festival brings together some of Canada’s top actors, directors, and designers. Together, they create unforgettable shows for all ages.
The festival runs from June to September. Each season features multiple plays, usually including at least one comedy and one tragedy.
Bard on the Beach was founded by Christopher Gaze in 1990. He was born in the UK and trained as a classical actor. After moving to Canada, he saw an opportunity to make Shakespeare more accessible.
The first season had just one tent and one play — A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Around 6,000 people came to see it. Today, the festival welcomes more than 100,000 guests each year.
Despite its growth, Bard has stayed true to its roots. It keeps prices affordable. It offers educational programs. And it always focuses on the audience experience.
This year’s season runs from June 10 to September 20, 2025. There are four mainstage productions. Each one offers something different:
This is one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays. It’s about love, lies, and misunderstandings. Beatrice and Benedick are the stars of the show — two people who claim to hate each other but end up falling in love.
This version is set in a sun-soaked Mediterranean world. Expect colourful costumes, sharp dialogue, and plenty of laughs.
One of Shakespeare’s earliest works, this play is about friendship, romance, and betrayal. Two best friends fall in love with the same woman. What follows is a story full of twists and turns.
This year’s production has a modern flair, inspired by the 1980s. Think retro fashion, pop music, and high energy.
Three actors take on all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays — in just 90 minutes. This fast-paced comedy is silly, smart, and full of surprises.
If you’re new to Shakespeare, this is a great place to start. It’s light-hearted and easy to follow. But even die-hard fans will find something to enjoy.
This is a new play by Canadian actor and writer Jessica B. Hill. It tells the story of Emilia Bassano, a poet believed by some to be Shakespeare’s “Dark Lady” from his sonnets.
This powerful drama explores love, identity, and the hidden voices of history. It blends fact and fiction, offering a fresh look at the world of Elizabethan England.
All shows are performed in large, open-air tents. These are located in Sen̓áḵw/Vanier Park, near Kitsilano Beach. The location offers incredible views of English Bay, the North Shore mountains, and downtown Vancouver.
There are two performance spaces:
The BMO Mainstage – This is the larger tent. It seats 740 people and hosts the big productions.
The Howard Family Stage – A more intimate space with 240 seats. It’s used for smaller shows and new works.
Both venues are designed to feel close and personal. There are no bad seats. Even in the biggest tent, you feel connected to the actors.

Special days are set aside for families, with shorter performances, kids’ activities, and fun extras.
• Workshops and Education
The festival runs school programs and summer camps. These teach kids about acting, writing, and the power of storytelling. There are also workshops for adults.

Vancouverites look forward to Bard every summer. It’s a cultural tradition that brings people together.
Tourists love it too. Many say it’s one of the best parts of their trip to the city. You get world-class theatre, fresh air, and unbeatable views — all in one place.
Plus, there’s something magical about watching a play as the sun sets over the mountains.

Bring a blanket or cushion. The seats are comfy, but a little extra padding helps.
Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Give yourself time to find parking, pick up snacks, and get settled.
Turn off your phone. It’s a live performance. Keep the experience special for everyone.
Bard on the Beach is one of the best things to do in Vancouver in the summer. It’s smart, fun, and inspiring. Whether you love Shakespeare or think he’s hard to understand, Bard will change the way you see his work.
Come for the drama, stay for the sunset, and leave with a smile.
